Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2022 will occur on Monday, October 31. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.
On the 31st of October everybody can take part in two different kinds of celebrations in Peru: the typical Halloween celebration, as we know it from North America, and the ¨Día de la Canción Criolla¨.
Halloween, as it is celebrated in the US, is becoming more and more popular in Peru. We call it “Noche de Brujas”. It has not yet risen to this special kind of enthusiasm, where people plan out their night and even more importantly their costumes for weeks and decorate their houses with all kinds of creepy creatures – but we celebrate two crucial elements of US Halloween in Peru: Trick or Treating and of course: parties!
Halloween es un día festivo que se celebra cada año el 31 de octubre, y este año Halloween será el lunes 31 de octubre. La tradición se originó con el antiguo festival celta de Samhain, cuando la gente encendía hogueras y usaba disfraces para alejar a los fantasmas. En el siglo VIII, el Papa Gregorio III designó el 1 de noviembre como un tiempo para honrar a todos los santos. Pronto, el Día de Todos los Santos incorporó algunas de las tradiciones de Samhain. La noche anterior fue conocida como “All Hallows Eve”, y más tarde como “Halloween”. Con el tiempo, Halloween se convirtió en un día de actividades como pedir dulces, tallar linternas de jack-o-lantern, reuniones festivas, ponerse disfraces y comer golosinas.
El 31 de octubre todo el mundo puede participar en dos tipos diferentes de celebraciones en Perú: la típica celebración de Halloween, como la conocemos en América del Norte, y el «Día de la Canción Criolla».
Halloween, tal como se celebra en los Estados Unidos, se está volviendo cada vez más popular en Perú. Lo llamamos «Noche de Brujas». Todavía no se ha elevado a este tipo especial de entusiasmo, donde las personas planean su noche y, lo que es más importante, sus disfraces durante semanas y decoran sus casas con todo tipo de criaturas espeluznantes, pero celebramos dos elementos cruciales del Halloween de los Estados Unidos en Perú: Truco o trato y, por supuesto: ¡fiestas!
